Product Photo Requirements by Platform: Amazon, Shopify, eBay, Etsy (2026)

Exact size, aspect ratio, format, and background colour per marketplace

BGRemover Editorial · Published June 8, 2026 · 9-minute read

Every major marketplace has its own product photo spec, and the spec changes every couple of years. The most common reason for a listing to be suppressed (hidden from search) is non-compliant images — wrong size, wrong aspect ratio, busy background, watermarks, or text overlays that violate the platform's rules. Here is the consolidated 2026 spec for the 10 most-used platforms, plus a free checklist per platform that you can run through before you upload.

Amazon: white background, 2000x2000 px, 85% frame fill

Amazon's main image spec is the strictest of any major marketplace. The image must be on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), at least 2000x2000 px to enable zoom, with the product filling 85% or more of the frame. The file must be JPG, PNG, or GIF. No text, no watermarks, no logos, no badges, no inset images. The minimum dimension is 500x500 px (anything smaller is suppressed). Lifestyle images are allowed for the secondary images, but the main listing image must follow the white-background rule strictly.

Shopify: any background, 2048x2048 px recommended

Shopify is the most permissive of the major marketplaces. Any background colour is allowed, lifestyle shots are encouraged, and the only hard rule is that the image must be at least 800x800 px. The recommended size for crisp zoom is 2048x2048 px or larger, and the recommended format is JPG for photos, PNG for cutouts. Many Shopify themes crop to a square, so use a square or 4:5 aspect ratio to avoid awkward cropping.

Editor's note

Amazon will suppress (hide) any listing with the wrong main-image spec. The fix is the pure-white 2000x2000 px export, every time.

eBay: 800x800 px minimum, 1600x1600 px recommended

eBay's spec is similar to Shopify but with stricter listing-image rules. The minimum size is 500x500 px, the recommended size is 1600x1600 px or larger for the main image. The background can be any colour, but listings with a clean white background convert better. eBay allows text overlays (price, condition) on the secondary images but not on the main listing image.

Etsy: 2000x2000 px, lifestyle encouraged, 4:5 ratio for the listing

Etsy is a lifestyle-first marketplace — the main listing image should show the product in use, and the first thumbnail should be instantly recognisable. The recommended size is 2000x2000 px at 4:5 aspect ratio (portrait). Etsy allows any background, lifestyle or studio, and the rules on text overlays are stricter than eBay (no promotional text, no sale prices, no watermarks).

Common questions

Quick answers about this topic

What happens if my product photo is the wrong size?

Amazon, Walmart, and Alibaba will suppress the listing (hide it from search) until the photo is fixed. Shopify, eBay, and Etsy will accept the photo but display it at a low resolution, which hurts click-through and conversion.

Can I use the same photo for every platform?

Not if the platform rules differ. A white-background 2000x2000 photo works on Amazon, Walmart, Google Shopping, and Alibaba. The same photo on Etsy or Shopify is acceptable but does not match the lifestyle-first best practice. For each platform, you may need a slightly different crop or background.

How do I produce platform-ready photos in bulk?

Cut out the product once in BGRemover, then export the cutout at the right size and background colour for each platform. The whole workflow for 100 SKUs across 4 platforms is about 2 hours of focused work.
