Remove Background from Image in Figma
Built-in trick vs better-quality alternative
Figma is a vector design tool — it doesn't have a built-in background removal command for raster images. But two practical approaches let you use cutouts inside Figma designs.

Method 1 — BGRemover First, Then Figma
Best for: any image where you need full transparency
Remove background in BGRemover
Open /workspace, upload your image, and download a transparent PNG.
Import the PNG into Figma
Drag the PNG from your file explorer directly onto the canvas, or use File → Place image.
Use the cutout in your design
The PNG has full transparency preserved. Place it behind text, on top of colored shapes.
Export or share
Select the cutout and press Ctrl+Alt+E to export. Choose PNG for the transparent raster.
Method 2 — Figma's Image Fill + Blend Mode Trick
Best for: when you can't preprocess the image
Create a rectangle the same size as your image
Draw a rectangle and size it to match your image dimensions.
Fill the rectangle with the image
Select the rectangle. In the Fill section, add a fill and select the image.
Set the blend mode to 'Destination In'
In the Blend section, change the blend mode to Destination In.
Export note
The 'Destination In' trick only works within Figma — the exported PNG will still have the background.
Figma background removal — frequently asked questions
Does Figma have a background removal tool?
Figma has no built-in background removal command for raster images. The practical solution is to remove the background in BGRemover first, then import the PNG into Figma.
Can I export a transparent PNG from Figma?
Yes, but only if the PNG you import already has transparency. Figma exports images as-is.
Remove background in 5 seconds, then design in Figma
BGRemover prepares the transparent PNG. Figma handles the design. Open /workspace, upload your image, download the cutout.
