Remove Background in Paint.net — 3 Methods

Method 1 — Magic Wand Tool (Fastest)

Best for: simple images with solid-color backgrounds

Open your image in Paint.net

Drag and drop your image onto the Paint.net window, or File → Open.

Select the Magic Wand tool

Press K to activate the Magic Wand. Set the Tolerance to 20–40.

Click the background

Click once on the background area. Use Ctrl+Click to add areas, Alt+Click to subtract.

Delete and export

Press Delete to remove the selected background. Export as PNG.

Method 2 — Background Remover Plugin (AI-Assisted)

Best for: faster results without manual selection work

Install the Background Remover plugin

Download from the Paint.net plugin forum. Copy the .dll to your Paint.net\Effects folder.

Restart Paint.net

The new plugin appears under Effects → Background Remover.

Run the effect

Go to Effects → Background Remover. Adjust the threshold if needed. Click OK.

Export as PNG

File → Save As → PNG. Make sure 'Save transparency' is checked.

Does Paint.net have automatic background removal?

Paint.net doesn't have a built-in AI background remover, but the Background Remover plugin adds one. Without plugins, the Magic Wand tool is the fastest approach.

Can Paint.net save PNG with transparency?

Yes. When saving, check the 'Save transparency' option. The image must be in RGBA mode (Image → Mode → RGBA).
